Keating used the long punch during Brisbane's 3 peat, Just bash it forward. But tactics like that only work so long if you keep using them, you need to mix it up.
One I used once was to get one mid right behind the other ruck and have someone coming down the left on the run. I'd drop it straight down behind the other ruck, quick handpass to the bloke running past, instant inside 50. Worked 3 times in a row before they got wise. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

From the last game, Grundy had 38 hit outs and cox 6. Given that Cox generally takes the ruck deep in F50 letting Grundy hang back, that suggests Cox didn't play a lot of ruck time.
If the Tiggers try the same stunt of resting Nankervis during the 3rd, I'd rest Grundy forward and play Cox against the Tiggers 2nd ruck, with instructions to hit it clear of the contest rather than dropping it down. A couple of midfielders staying wide giving Cox a choice of left or right, hit them on the run, instant inside 50. Give Richmond something to think about. |
I like it. Stui for coach!

Surprises me that this doesn't happen more often. If Grigg is rucking why not a 30 metre plus punch your way? Gets the defenders under pressure and your midfielders moving the right way.
Remember late 70's playing the Tigers and we were down 10.2 to 1.1.
Hafey moves Peter Moore into the ruck. He takes a long run and jumps, smacks the ball forward. They couldn't stop this, and we get up and win easily.
A tactic that can certainly be used to unsettle the opposition. |
Doesn’t work as well these days because most teams start with an extra in their back half ( usually a winger ) You would be hitting into an uneven contest. Maybe a surprise tactic but you would want to be hitting it forward to even numbers at worst. |

I think regardless of actual ruck tactics, is that cox need to do more ruck work this week. Richmond are last quarter specialists, we need to hold Brody back a tad so he's able to go beast mode for the last 30 minutes _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Yeah, I felt that we tried exactly that against the Giants. _________________ Get back on top. |

Yes Cam. Possibly this was largely motivated by a desire to play DeGod one-out in the goal square, particularly given that GWS didn't seem able to find a player with the right combination of attributes to stand him.
This actually worries me a bit. We seem at be playing DeG more and more as a specialist full forward, and it risks making us one dimensional. Yes, yes, we have used Stevo, WHE, Cox, Adams, Thomas, Sidebottom, Teloar, and several others out of the square this year, but these last few weeks we seem to have been drifting more and more towards using de Goey as our default full forward. This is not good for his development (he should play all over the ground, including in the middle, at least half the time) and I'm not convinced that it gains us any extra goals.
JdeG gets the pill a lot, but he gives away way too many frees running into packs pretending that no-one can tackle him successfully instead of looking harder for an unguarded teammate, and his set shot kicking is only fair. WHE is a mile better. So is Stevo, not to mention Thomas and Checkers.
JdeG is THE most likely to convert a ball deep inside our 50 into a possession and a scoring attempt, yep. But Thomas and WHE are the most likely to convert an attempt into a goal rather than a point. So, on balance, call it more nearly even between the three of them.
Running a mix of players through the 50 makes us harder to match up on and more successful. When you are on a good thing, stick to it! _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I don't think JdeG is over his bone bruising. He's carrying an injury for mine hence the overtime up forward. _________________ No Pressure, No Diamonds

It’s easy to say give Cox more ruck time to ease the work load of Grundy, but that’s not the way it works out in the real world. The ruck work of Cox was poor against WCE. He improved a bit against GWS. If Cox is beaten you can’t afford to hold back Grundy. Also Cox seems to improve over the duration of a game which comes down to the fact he has a great tank. Against Richmond we can’t afford Cox to be dropping marks for three quarters before he takes a grab. Another point is you can’t turn a player into something he isn’t. Cox isn’t Keating. Cox doesn’t bash the ball like Keating does. That’s not his nature. He palms it to advantage into the hands of a mid or he glides the ball out of the hands of the opposition into the path of the mids. |

Agreed!
His presence also allows Langdon to do what he does best and drift across and take intercept marks. That was particularly evident last Saturday night. I think the timing of Goldy and Treloar's return has been about as good as it could have been. Just enough time to find their feet and for others to adjust to their impact on the ground. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't. |

I was pretty happy with the way we started the last quarter, in light of what happened V the Eagles.
We can learn and can do. That's important going into this week. |

Trelor ,Howe and Goldy have assisted a great team to be even better
Whether that makes the ultimate prize our ❓❓❓ but for me I feel we are
walking taller
And in words of another coach “If it bleeds you can kill it”
