Nicely plated, Stui.
Correct P4S!
I knew there was an older term again, I just couldn't remember it, probably because my brain has been infected by all this modern management-speakitis. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

FWIW, Nick Maxwell's title at CFC is "Leadership and Culture Manager". |

Apparently, the sledging then stopped. I had to make a decision as to what to do though. I decided to only give the Pies supporter a warning on the basis that we are all entitled to punch an Essendon supporter once in the right circumstances. |

Two Kings: AFL great Paul Roos teams up with Andrew Gaze
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/basketball/two-kings-afl-great-paul-roos-teams-up-with-andrew-gaze-20181008-p508gd.html
"... Roos had flown to Honolulu to consult with Gaze whom he and his company Performance by Design are helping improve the leadership and culture at the Kings.
... they sought out extra help in the form of Roos, who grew up with Gaze, and his company who include experts in culture, team growth and leadership."
It looks like Roos is in on the act. I guess he sees easy money... Wouldn't it be cheaper if Gaze just consults his father first? Hasn't his father been more successful than Roos? |

"Performance by Design" has "Leading Teams" fingerprints on it, in the form of Gerard Murphy (who, you may recall, had an abrupt and unexplained --- was there a non-disclosure agreement? --- parting of ways with Richmond in 2016). After his LT/AFL days, PBD's website says he worked with the Great Britain national rugby team and West Ham United. It also tells us Tami Roos has a "PhD in Meditation and Mindfulness, University of Hawaii". Elsewhere, this is described as a "PhD in Parapsychic Science". (She grew up in America before marrying Paul.) |

It's more than wank, it's dangerous shit. I mean, Parapsychic 'Science'?? |

It's no secret we started winning when we cut the psychobabble consultant bullshit-artists, and just got down to basics and being decent hard-working human beings. It's also no secret Adelaide started losing and fell apart when they took on the psychobabble consultant bullshit-artists. There's a lot of money in consultancy, and that tells you all you need to know about how much you can trust them. |

Apart from the psychobabble aspect, if you poke around a bit, you find other possibly troubling questions about all of this. e.g. When Roos was coach of Melbourne FC, the club brought her in to "teach" the players. (Cue accusations of nepotism.) The afl.com.au article that reports that says this "Parapsychic Science" PhD is from the "American Institute of Holistic Theology", which appears to have been a "diploma mill" in Ohio. (Should the title "PhD" have some sort of legislative protection, at least restricting it to accredited universities?) What does the PBD website refer to, then, when it says "Uni. of Hawaii"? Is this inaccurate advertising, or did she obtain a separate equally cheap "PhD" from Hawaii?
Does anyone still want Paul Roos to be senior coach? |

Barak Obama went to the University of Hawaii and then to Harvard. He chose law in the latter case, after smoking a fair bit of weed in Honolulu (he did inhale) which may have made him a little sleepy as a President.
However, I don't think he would have advocated practising law without a certificate.
While I agree with Stui that you don't necessarily need a plumber to change a washer, I wouldn't have a plumber for a brain surgeon, even with parapsychic capabilities. _________________ JL |

Adelaide were/are a different story. ... Firstly, they were dominant for all of 2017 whereas we were underdogs almost every time we played a top 8 side. And the Crows had other things going on. Their club unraveled. I mean that stare they did in each final was idiotic. That's not a sign of a team that's in a comfortable place, mentally speaking. When you resort to silly gimmicks like that, I'd say it's a sign of precarious fortitude. And any time a player wanted to leave, they were publicly pilloried by Tex and the club. Disinvited from places etc. Yeah Pyke could very well be a sociopath. |
"Sociopath." How could I resist quoting such juicy opinions?
It's interesting (or is it irrelevant?) that Don Pyke's father was Frank Pyke, the sports scientist who's been credited with saving Lillee's back. |

A Collingwood story:
AFL clubs take a walk on the wild side
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-clubs-take-a-walk-on-the-wild-side-20180329-p4z705.html

The players knew they were in trouble when the former SAS soldiers panicked. Lost and exhausted in the bush one of the soldiers broke down and told the players to tell his wife and kids he loved them.
The men who came to break them down physically and mentally, broke down physically and mentally.
It was 1987, a time before the internet, mobile phones and social media. Collingwood’s entire playing group was lost high in the Victorian alps. There were no coaches with them, no in-club media videoing every step, just the players and the former soldiers who got them lost.
They were not deliberately lost in a stagey way, they were regular bush-walker-goes-missing-in-the-alps type of lost.
The players wondered even for years afterwards if it was part of an elaborate set-up. ... But it wasn’t. They just went hiking in the bush and got hopelessly helplessly lost, ran out of water and were in serious trouble.
They had gone three days into a one-and-a-half-day hike when they decided to turn back. They were out of food, the maps they had were either wrong or the mountains were in the wrong place. Repeatedly the ex-soldiers told the players they were close to a rendezvous point only to walk for hours more trying to reach the point that never came.
After it became clear they were lost and that the soldiers had no idea the players mutinied. Mutiny is not normally recommended as the ideal form of leadership and bonding but it proved to be the case for this group.
The Collingwood players survived but while blisters healed, some reputations never recovered. Leigh Matthews, who was coach at the time was, startled to learn his players had been in any danger but then quickly wanted to know which ones had been the strong and who was weak.
Darren Millane emerged on that trip as the leader who galvanised a group. Shane Kerrison and Shane Morwood too were elevated in the group. ...
The whingers, the ones who carried on and wouldn’t take their turn toting the water, didn’t last long after that. ... The coaches didn’t need to learn who they were, their teammates knew and they lost respect for them.
That experience in the bush, the premiership group all reflected on later, was the turning point in group culture. It was genuinely hairy at the time, the organisers lost control, but it had its desired effect.

That's been reported several times before as part of the making of the 1990 premiership side.
As they said, no mobile phones back then. They were in the bush, unable to contact anyone and got lost by some phuktards. Some clearly emerged stronger for it and some were broken, if not in body, in reputation and respect.
While it may have been effective, that was more accidental than planned and I wouldn't recommend anyone try it.
Team building shit was massive in the 80's before OH&S got involved. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

AFL clears Crows of rules breach over camp

"The investigation identified there was a need for greater due diligence regarding the manner in which the club identified, implemented and managed its pre-season camp," the AFL said on Thursday in a statement.
"The AFL has recommended improved oversight when engaging external providers and further investment in the club's integrity area."
The Crows have pledged to appoint a full-time integrity officer at the club, Adelaide's chief executive Andrew Fagan said.

Fagan said Adelaide currently employs a part-time integrity officer, but would now make that a full-time position and broaden its scope, as is the case at a handful of other AFL clubs.
