Only the delusional will tell you that gun laws work... if I wanted to shoot someone, I could have a glok in my hands before your head hits the pillow tonight.
That's a fact. |
So what’s your theory on why Australia has fewer mass shootings per capita than America, exactly? We just want to shoot people less? |
Therein lies the answer: despite all the macho talk, Skids has something else in his hands other than a Glock. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Yep, as per the link Wokko posted
Guns were just as prevelant in the US 30 years ago, yet mass shootings were a lot less.
It's not the guns... it's the people and their state of mind. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

So, guns removed and, as Australia’s gun buy back demonstrates, the “state of mind” becomes irrelevant. |

And yet there are virtually no mass shootings and even when a would-be terrorist wants to go crazy in Bourke St, he tries to do so with a knife. |

All I have to say is, thank god this isn't a topic of mainstream policy debate in Australia. We are truly blessed in the VPT to have, er, such a diversity of views on this topic. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

or a few hours in Chicago....
look i love the US, but it does worry me when im there that anyone could have a gun in their purse or back pocket.
In Australia the only people who have a certain capacity of guns and above, are criminals, since they are illegal. Not a massive number of sane people feel the need to keep an illegal semi automatic in the cupboard at home where little johnny can grab it when he cracks the sads. In the US the allowable killing capacity of legally owned guns is far too high. From what i have seen and remember, the majority of the kids involved in school shootings didnt buy the tool they used in the back ally from the Mayans, they just got it out of dads bedside table. If dad couldnt legally have (fill the gap) that can kill 10 people in 30 sec, then the body count would be a lot lower, the chances of taking down the shooter without another gun would be much greater. If they just got rid of the semi autos or what ever they are, im not a gun lover, a lot less people would be killed.
id love to see all guns banned and destroyed but there is as much chance of that as someone having the guts to shut down cigarette factories, so inch by inch, the no smoke zone around the MCG is a great start, but i wont be happy with it for long before i want more. but its a start. Same as guns. just slowly bring in legislation that bans high powered guns, and work the way down.
Yes the mentality in the US re guns is very different to here, especially in redneck country, but that doesnt mean it cant change. All those kids that staged the no guns rally, keep it rolling, they are the future. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Comparing Australia to the US when it comes to guns is like comparing apples and oranges. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Agreed. They can legally buy all sorts of stuff there that we can't and never could.
Yeah there's potentially a lot of illegal guns still in Austalia, but estimates on how many are more like guesses than estimates. A lot have been handed in ( I did) and a lot weren't and some of these have been systematically stolen.
All things considered, I prefer our current gun laws and situation the the US. They're too far down the rabbithole. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

^The tactic of triggering local fear to override disciplined decision making becomes increasingly effective as the problem worsens. It takes real men and women of godly courage and purpose to ski down that hill. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Another key legal difference is in self defence laws. In the US, self defence is a legitimate reason to own a gun, in Australia it's not.
In a number of US states you can shoot to kill at any intruder in your home, legally. In Australia you have a reasonable force test, so if you shoot an unarmed intruder, you're one going to gaol.
The other bit was best covered by Jim Jeffries in his gun control piece. If you follow the law and legally own firearms, they need to be locked up in a gun safe with ammo locked up separately. If you get people breaking into your home, good luck asking them to wait a few minutes while you get your keys, unlock the gun safe, get out a gun, unlock the ammo safe, load the gun, then prepare to shoot. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

There are quick release gun safes with silent finger print scanners. Or just buy something from Dmitri down the pub and keep it wherever you want. Sure you'll cop a charge if you have to use it to defend your home, but better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. If you never need to use it then nobody ever needs to know about it. |

You want to get around laws without actually breakig them?
Legally buy a coach gun. Short barrel shotgun. Load with SG's.
Keep in gun safe during day, unloaded. In early evening take it out (when cops are not going to do random inspections), load it and put it beside bed. In morning, unload and put back in gun safe. Rinse and repeat.
Coach gun loaded with SG's will damn near cut a man in half at a 4m range. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
