Funny you should say that E, as I was thinking exactly the same thing!
Am I correct in saying that for the coaches and playing group last season, it was "We Are Enough"?? |

^ "The full version of the team theme ... was ‘‘nothing else matters but us’’,[sic] those final two words were added to the Metallica song, which became a fixture at home games."
(Dare I mention that adding those words makes "else" tautological?)

Okay, I'll create a poll, probably some time in the period 26th-1st (but then others will have to campaign to get people to vote -- I guess a suitably provocative thread title might help). It will be an epic poll. I think the OP in the poll thread should provide some sort of 'guidance', though.
I guess the arguments for change are:
0) Curses??
1) Discomfort or embarrassment, etc. about the inaccuracy of the claim.
2) Outdated language: is this word used anywhere else nowadays?
3) The only non-rhyming part of the lyrics.
4) Unsettling links to slavery, racism, etc.
The arguments for retention are:
1) Tradition??
2) Effort required to choose and then adopt a replacement.
Anything else? |

Don't forget the song Dolly Grey is about someone travelling halfway across the world to go to war.

Well, that would be conveyed by the words, not the tune, which is one good reason we have never used those words.
While we're talking about Dolly Gray, I'll note that most of the words don't seem to fit the tune (that we're familiar with). That makes me wonder whether we are just using a fraction of the Dolly Gray music.
Update:
Yeah, it's just the refrain we're using.
There is separate music for the verses. |

I was thinking more like "%$^£$%^&%%! I hear the siren calling." Might have been more appropriate. _________________ Get back on top. |

Very funny Cam!! There's so many substitute lines we could have depending on how our season was going!!
Geez, you've done some great research K. I never knew Edward Woodward could sing like that!
You've compiled a good list of pros and cons. I can't think of anything else at the moment (without being a smart arse anyway!!). Many thanks for applying your mind to this.
So, one poll Yes or No for change? Then assuming there's a resounding Yes, another thread to call for replacement lines??? Then send all the gathered information to the club? |

Goodbye Dolly Gray (v.2)
Harry McDonough (1901): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsbwba3dA70
Hugh Donovan (c. 1916): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqKFNcTFqdY
Florrie Forde (c. WW1?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y80_zOiZs-g
Edward Woodward (1975): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoMf3_wT1rA
Tim van Eyken, London Voices, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH5y7AO8S-Y
The sound quality of the Donovan recording is quite good for something a century old.
I think we should have a poll for favourite Goodbye Dolly Gray performance.
And we need to write Collingwood lyrics for the separate tune of the verses.
Hmm... Okay, here is a first stab at Verse 1 (to the music of Goodbye Dolly Gray -- listen above), which retains much of the original lyrics (of Will D. Cobb -- the music is by Paul Barnes):
We have come to fight the fight, Collingwood,
We have come to show our might, Collingwood,
There's a magpie in the air,
It is swooping everywhere,
It is time to do and dare, Collingwood.
Don't you hear the tramp of feet, Collingwood,
Sounding through suburban streets, Collingwood,
'Tis the Magpie Army, right,
In the famous black and white,
'Tis an awe-inspiring sight, Collingwood.
[Refrain] Good old Collingwood forever... (etc.) |

Hey, that's pretty darn good K!!!! Very imaginative.
Love the mention of the Magpie and the Magpie Army.
A bit sad for us country folk that it only mentions "suburban streets"
Just as aside, my nearest neighbour is a km away. For many years, they had a huge Collingwood flag flying from their front yard. In 2010, I was sooo tempted to stop, get out of the car, and go and kneel down before it!!! |

PPie, the original words (which I tried to retain to a large extent) are:
"Sounding thro' the village street, Dolly Gray."
When I wrote "suburban streets", I was of course thinking of the suburb of Collingwood and surrounds! Are there other possibilities?
I rather like original lines such as "It is time to do and dare, Dolly Gray".
In my previous post, I wrote "Verse 1". The second verse is more divergent, I think, and a single verse has two halves that repeat the same tune, anyway. Perhaps the one verse and refrain cover everything that needs to be said.
P.S. Back on topic (well, back on the new topic...), you seem to be much more confident in predicting the poll result than I. Are you sure there won't be great resistance to removing "cakewalk"? I'm not even sure it won't take a lot of time for a reasonable number of votes to be cast (so I think it's better that I put more questions in the first poll, which still doesn't prevent having a second poll later). |

I agree with you K.
1) Certain phrases from the original lyrics have great impact and you cleverly adapted them to a modern setting.
2) Yeah, I understood where you were coming from with "suburban" streets. Can't think of a suitable word that covers country as well as city, but will give it further deliberation.
3) One verse and one refrain would be quite enough!! Supporters would have to learn a lot of new words and you know how resistant some people can be to learning and change!!
I'm honestly not sure how many people could give a stuff about "cakewalk", only that it has been irking me for years! Clearly (to mimic Bucks) there was enough support some years back when they tried to change it. I agree that it could take some time to gather sufficient feedback to warrant informing the club, but that's okay.
I reckon it's worth giving it a go anyway...... it could help lead to a whole new era for The Pies!! |
