I feel like he might return some day. But he's just given up 2 million dollars. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Well, things obviously must be very bad for him now and in the past few years. |

The life of an AFL footballer is not easy. He's said he doesn't enjoy his footy anymore, with a mixture of injuries & mental health leading to poor form on field.
He has been under high scrutiny for being a #1 pick and for being paid such a high amount so early on in his career. (Makes you think about Sam Weideman).
Could it be that he is just not as dominate or things are not as easy as they were in the junior leagues? It cant be? We all saw what he did in the GF. He's good enough to play AFL. He was BOG that day, despite the Norm Smith going to Johansen.
To pass up $1.5 million is huge. His problems must be bigger than a big pay check. A lot of people would have stuck around and played VFL. So you really have to admire him for passing up that amount of money to get himself right.
Sadly, the cameras will probably follow him around for a little while. And there's going to be speculation about him coming back because he is still only 23. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

It also makes me wonder if the Bulldogs are a club that have things in place for players/staff struggling with mental health.
I hope he gets back to enjoying football again. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Shock decision, but it's no secret he's been having personal issues to deal with, namely depression and his battle with injuries.
If you look at the whole picture, then it's easy to argue that the Dogs squandered too much money for him and he didn't live up to his potential, but there's a strong argument to say that he was worth every cent as he was pivotal in their GF success in 2016.
I was reading an article that stated he only received $150,000 in 2015 and then received $1.7 million in 2016 and 2017, and he was still on a million in 2018 and possibly 2019. The article also suggested he's giving up $1.5 million over the next two years, so that roughly translates to $750,000 a year.
Based on that information, this would be roughly his pay packet for each season with the Dogs if he fulfilled his contract obligations to the end of 2021.
2015 = $150,000 ($150,000)
2016 = $1,700,000 ($1.8 million)
2017 = $1,700,000 ($3.5 million)
2018 = $1,000,000 ($4.5 million)
2019 = $1,000,000 ($5.5 million)
2020 = $750,000 ($6.25 million)
2021 = $750,000 ($7 million) _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Maybe no club is. When Bevo was interviewed for his job, they thought he was "off the scale" in terms of empathy. |

The Cometti commentary of his GF goal ("a stadium holds its breath") is going to become iconic. |

I'm sure when the time is right, clubs will talk with his management.
It'd be a great story if he could find his passion for the game again. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Shame.
He ended with 96 fewer AFL games than Jarryd Blair, 62 fewer wins, almost 2,000 fewer disposals, just over a quarter as many kicks, less than half as many marks, 71 fewer goals, 75 fewer goal assists, 601 fewer tackles and 7 fewer Brownlow votes.
Just saying. |
