So apparently we have ripped the band aid off metaphorically speaking salary cap wise in November and are going to be a player in the 2021 free agency stakes. Lets hope that the Adam Treloar experiment has taught us one valuable lesson (other than back-ended deals) and that is recruit "match-winners". Adam for all of his ball gathering abilities couldn't and didn't win us the requisite amount of football matches and finals that other big recruits from rival clubs have managed to achieve.
Examples of match winners:
Tom Lynch: cue the 2019 Preliminary Final against the Cats
Paddy Dangerfield: wins 5-7 matches per year for the Cats
Lachie Neale: similar to Paddy has been the panacea for the Lions the last two seasons
Lance Franklin: yes no flag but achieved all but....
Examples of selfish accumulators who fill their boots and wallets:
Adam Treloar
Tom Mitchell
Jaegar O'Meara
Chad Wingard
Brad Hill
Tim Kelly
So Ned and Recruiters:
Steer clear of spending $800,000+ for Zach Merrett, Matt Crouch, Jack Billings, Luke Parker etc...
Interesting watch ahead. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

If we have decided to save a war chest for a free agent in the future, I'd hope its for either C.Petracca or P.Cripps _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

Except you are always going to pay overs for a quality free agent. That’s what happens in any bidding war. At some point their contract catches up with them and the only pass mark is either being part of a flag or not. Just ask any Swans supporter.
Matt Taberner is pretty much the only quality tall forward who is a free agent at the end of this season. He’s a northern Vic country who has now put together two solid seasons in an ordinary team.
He’s no superstar but he’s a target we need forward of centre ( without the benefit of our 2021 season having been played out ) He’s generally good ffor a couple most weeks and proven to be durable. So in his case, it’s more about filling a ( likely ) void rather than revolving a team around a “ superstar “

If we are not going to pick up a 'Superstar', I'd rather we save our money so we can keep our own as they improve and other clubs become interested in poaching them... _________________ All Aboard!! Choo Choo!!! |

Looking ahead to the end of 2021 season, the planets seem to be aligning that we will be making a play for a free agent.
We have picked up eight new kids in the 2020 draft ( s ) List wise, I’m not sure we need much more youth than those additions.
As it stands now, if Nick Daicos was to go anywhere before pick four, we don’t have enough points to pick him with our current pick selections ( that’s no big deal by the way ) That best guess scenario is based on all clubs MOST PROBABLE ladder finishes at end of 2021.
The point being, I can’t see us being in a position to add any decent ready made players to our list at end of 2021 unless it’s via a free agency pick up. Alternatively, we can always trade away quality to introduce some quality back in but invariably that’s akin to robbing Peter to pay Paul. |

Will be 28 in June. But like you said, is the only one available. 198cm FF that kicks straight. Only 87 games in 8 years, with 16 coming in 2020. Considering we passed on so many available FFs this offseason, it makes me think we wouldn't make a play here. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

2021 Free Agents:
Quote: | MATT CROUCH (Adelaide Crows)
RORY LAIRD (Adelaide Crows)
BRODIE SMITH (Adelaide Crows)
DAYNE ZORKO (Brisbane Lions)
PATRICK CRIPPS (Carlton)
JAMIE ELLIOTT (Collingwood)
ZACH MERRETT (Essendon)
JOEL SELWOOD (Geelong Cats)
JOSH KELLY (GWS Giants)
LUKE BREUST (Hawthorn)
MAX GAWN (Melbourne)
LUKE MCDONALD (North Melbourne)
ROBBIE GRAY (Port Adelaide)
NICK VLASTUIN (Richmond)
JACK BILLINGS (St Kilda)
GEORGE HEWETT (Sydney Swans)
LUKE PARKER (Sydney Swans)
DOM SHEED (West Coast Eagles)
MARCUS BONTEMPELLI (Western Bulldogs) |
A lot of those guys will be 30 or over when the season finishes.
Cripps is the big one. But do you think Carlton will let that happen? Especially as it seems they're finally on the way up.
Josh Kelly will only be 26 but will be demanding huge dollars. He'll also be looking for a flag.
Cant see Bont, Sheed or McDonald leaving, which leaves Merrett. The rest are either too old or not that good.
We might not get involved at all. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

I knew he wasn’t young but didn’t think he was “ that “ old either. He’s certainly been a late bloomer but at 28, he does lose a bit of appeal.
I have no doubt there is something in the wind. Time will tell I guess. |

Which is the exact mistake we made in the Treloar/Stephenson debarkle. Please learn from your mistakes Collingwood ffs🤬 _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine! |

Would love Merrett as he is the complete package midfielder we desperately need to fill the void of Pendlebury/Treloar/Beams/Sidebottom etc.
TBH I would hope we get 2 quality midfielders of the ilk of ZM. _________________ Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero. |
