Is all the "free Assange" stuff, like avatars on footy bulletin boards, an "external pressure campaign"? Aren't you worried about a kneejerk response? |

For me, the most important thing has always been his work (which, really, was hobbled after 2011 or so – Wikileaks from that point on was a bit of a zombie operation) and the case against him. I have no doubt that, towards the end, Wikileaks had become something of a vanity project, although I would still defend his decision to leak the DNC emails, because I think US voters had a right to know what the party was doing behind closed doors. In any case, his biggest legacy was what Wikileaks was set up for, and what it actually achieved: an incredible conduit for information and whistleblowing in a world in which the screws were and are tightening on open democracy. In the big picture, it’s hard to think of many things much more important than that. So whatever his personal eccentricities or “bad” politics, or whatever, his imprisonment, extradition and potential show trial in America seem to me to be nothing else than an act of aggression by state power, big capital, etc. against the rest of us; an assertion of who calls the shots and who’d better learn their place. That’s why, to me, Assange might not be the most heroic, morally pure or admirable person alive, but he is the world’s most important political prisoner. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Extradition decision to be handed down around 9pm tonight. Will be somewhat anticlimactic as there will be an appeal regardless, but I’ll still fall off my chair if the judge, Vanessa Baraitser, who has been astoundingly one-sided throughout, doesn’t decide in favour of extradition. If she does, I hope she can manage to find a way to sleep well at night for the rest of her life. |

^ Pretty much the best hope at the moment. A lot of his high-profile supporters seem to be in favour of pardoning Assange, so let’s wait and see – he only has two weeks left in office. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
