Post subject: The 1979 Sydney Luna Park fire | |
|
The ABC has been following this up for a few weeks, now. The detail in the following story is the first time that I have seen reasonably clear evidence that the fire at least could have been deliberately lit (and, on a fair reading of the recollections of these witnesses, you'd say that, on the balance of probability, it was). The police response is quite disturbing, with the benefit of hindsight:

I suppose this is common knowledge, but I read through that entire article and had no idea until the very end that the fire was fatal (killing six children and one adult, per Wikipedia). Talk about burying the lede!
The question for me is, why would police be so keen to drop this case? I guess we know plenty of dodgy things about the NSW police of that era already, but I don't think there's any suggestion they were complicit – so perhaps it was just laziness / lack of curiosity on their part? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Saw a bit of the first programme last week. I look forward to watching it. Extraordinary corruption ( well maybe ordinary corruption for Sidanee and NSW)

That was back when Neville Wran and his Labor mob were running the state. People joked back then that the NSW Police were the best money could buy _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Neville Wran was Premier during the Rum Rebellion?
You really should have done that BA & taken up Australian History.
“Wran was the model of a modern major-general
He had information animal, vegetable and mineral” or something like that 😉
You would then appreciate the history of corruption starting from a British colony in NSW
Robert Askin who made corruption an art form sends his best to you

Then again good old Jack Lang (a mentor of sorts to a 15 year old Paul Keating one told PK who was young and impressionable that “in a two horse race always back self-interest” _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

keep in mind I grew up in NSW. "Nifty" was Wran's preferred Nickname, "Shifty" was more common even from my Dad who was rusted on Labor to the point of handing out how to vote cards at elections. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Nah, you’ve got Nifty all wrong; he merely associated with colourful identities. I recall Askin from when I was young bloke and both of them ( Askin and Nev) have carried on a long and fine tradition in Sin City _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

It has been a brilliant doco. I've never been into Royal Commissions, seem to be a dime a dozen but this needs an inquiry far beyond if possible. It's all very well saying 'Everyone new the cops and pollies were on the take', but these families have had their lives ruined by the State particularlly Jenny Godson. |
