Nicksters,

I was too young to see/remember this bloke play for Collingwood back in the mid 80's. He sounded like a somewhat enigmatic figure from what my old man used to tell me. All I know is that he was a big unit and he won a Copeland one year (86?).

Was hoping some of you older folk could speak a little about this bloke.

Cheers

Wes spent most of his early years as a skinny rake type ruckman who failed to live up to the legacy.

He somewhat mysteriously (see Brian Taylor's book) turned up for the first game one year looking like someone straight off the American pro-wrestling circuit. He had a stellar season that one year only to be followed up with subsequent year's of weight issues and injury problems.

Most enduring memory is off him always trying to take overhead marks with his head down. One of the most frustrating Pies players to watch in my time of watching football.

At best a decent ruck. Always looked as if he had been manufactured, not born a footballer. Very predictable game.

Quite a good tap ruckman, reasonably mobile but couldn't catch a beachball overhead if thrown gently by a 5 year old.

As some of the others said, he showed up one season and had gone from a stick figure to a massive MOFO. Unfortunately, he still played like Jane.

Giving credit where it's due, he did play a lot more games and win more copelands than I did. It's fair to say he was no Peter Moore but then again, neither was craig stewart or derek shaw.

Lou Richards did a piece in the Sun with Wes all pumped up, comparing him to Lou Ferrigno who played "the Incredible Hulk" on TV. He did a similar piece not long before with Rene Kink.

Was handy at boundry throw ins and would take a few good marks, but was a 80s footballer.
Probaby today would find it hard to crack into Williamstown, nothing against the guy but he played a different style of football.
