As a long time music writer (that's journalist, not musician), I'm quite happy to go along with the opinion that the White Stripes are the greatest thing to happen to rock and roll in at least a decade.
You really have to see them, though. I've seen a lot of bands, and Meg and Jack White really blew my circuits at the Livid Festival last year - easily one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
Hype? Sure. But truly great bands inspire that kind of devotion and division.

Yeah, and they're just the same as all "rock" bands. Don't really like them all that much.. then again, i dont really like that kinda music. _________________ Nelly the cow is a beautiful cow

Well, I don't know what your tastes are, Dyso, but why wait that long?
The Beatles were brilliant. So are the White Stripes. Just because there's a squillion record sales between the two (although the Stripes are doing nicely thanks) doesn't mean jack ... oops, pardon the pun.
So there. I've hung my red and white colours to the mast. To me, the greatest thing since at least Nirvana and probably the Ramones - and I've seen both of those bands.
Not that I expect any of you to care - except Inthecoldnight, of course, and it was to him/her I'm replying!

After realising this thread isn't about Collingwoods alternative strip, I checked out some of the songs from The White Stripes.
I hadn't previously heard of the name however I immediately recognised some of their tunes. Mainly "Seven Nation Army" and "Hotel Yorba". They're good songs but not really my taste. I like "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground"(?) and "Jimmy the Exploder" much more.
They're a good band and they definitely have an original style but it's not for me, I like the heavy stuff. |

Very deep, very hard lyrics those ones...........
Quote: | We started living in an old house
My ma gave birth and we were checking it out
It was a baby boy
So we bought him a toy
It was a ray gun
And it was 1981 |
Not much better, but painting a more complicated image maybe?...........

LOL! You raised a very good point with that reply Eunos. I think all musicians can be accused of writing some lyrically dumb songs, sometimes. |

Is this political comment on their lyrics "ray gun" (Reagan 1981)? Are they referring to nuclear war with the referrence about "the button"?
I really don't want to think too much about song lyrics...
I'm still trying to decipher Midnight Oils work after following them for 20 years

Quote: | You say you want a revolution
Well you know
we all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright
You say you got a real solution
Well you know
we'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well you know
We're doing what we can
But when you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright
You say you'll change the constitution
Well you know
we all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know know it's gonna be alright
Alright Alright

Of course the Beatles never spruiked political did they?
And before you examine the great MO, try and explain these to me.....
Quote: | I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I'm crying.
Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.
Mister City Policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like Lucy in the Sky, see how they run.
I'm crying, I'm crying.
I'm crying, I'm crying.
Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don't come, you get a tan
From standing in the English rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.
Expert textpert choking smokers,
Don't you thing the joker laughs at you?
See how they smile like pigs in a sty,
See how they snied.
I'm crying.
Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hari Krishna.
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.
Goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob g'goo.
