I have to agree with Eddie, there is little comfort to be found with the fact that everyone thinks the Magpies will be a good side in a couple of years. During the first 15 minutes of the fourth quarter, the only comfort to be had, was the shared pain being experienced amongst the Unofficial Cheer squad, behind the Ponsford goals (behind the point post actually, the Essenscum were behind the goals). We were not stunned to silence, but you will have to excuse us all, if we only occasionally bleeped (is that a word?) during this period. I know Alf, this is the time a real cheer squad should flourish, and we did rally for the remainder of the quarter. But to get so close, and to have our hopes dashed so clinically ... but I am starting at the end.
The city of Melbourne has been ravished by some flu - cold bug over the last two weeks. I reckon that explained the small crowd at the Doggies game the week before. Therefore I was not expecting a huge crowd for Saturday's night Essendon game, as people were still recovering, and the weather had been nasty over the last couple of days too. No mention of sell outs in the news, so I meandered along to the Cricketers Arm's at about 6:45. While not overflowing, it was packed. I found JLC, and he told me the bad news, most of the Ponsford stand had been allocated as reserved seats and there was only a little patch left in the lower level of the Ponsford for general admittance. I headed off immediately, did not even have a beer ...
... oops sorry, end of part 1.
