Harvs, Symonds face showdown
By ROBERT CRADDOCK in Durban
15mar03

ALL-ROUNDERS Andrew Symonds and Ian Harvey may tonight have the chance to go head-to-head for a place in Australia's World Cup semi-final side following a back injury to Michael Bevan.

Bevan is in doubt for the final Super Six match against tournament surprise packet Kenya.
His minor back complaint is unlikely to threaten his place in Tuesday's semi-final against New Zealand or Sri Lanka.

Symonds, who has missed the past two matches with a groin strain, could replace him after a fitness test at Australia's last training session.

Choosing between Symonds and Harvey for the semi-final has become a delicate issue, and was the focus of a long discussion by the team hierarchy yesterday. Although tonight's match has no bearing on the future of either team, captain Ricky Ponting hopes to crush Kenya to send a message of intimidation to the other teams.

"If we can play at our best, and hopefully the result will look after itself from there, then it will say a lot," Ponting said.

"India struggled to beat them a week ago. They've knocked Zimbabwe over. I think it will send out a pretty good message."

Kenya, meanwhile, is in a major pay dispute over its unexpected World Cup booty.

The Kenyans, who had been paid a fee of $3300 a man for the tournament, will receive a staggering $666,000 if they are beaten in the semi-finals, plus $166,000 from pool prizemoney.

The players say it is their right to take home the cash, but the Kenyan administration wants most of it.

The Kenya Cricket Association has already been under investigation for alleged misappropriation of funds, and the players are understood to have taken a strong stance at a meeting at the team's Durban hotel on Thursday.

The players said they had to make a stand while they were still in the tournament and their negotiating power was at its greatest.

Kenya entered the tournament with many players disenchanted about pay and considering leaving the game after the cup.

Aussie batsman Damien Martyn reinforced Ponting's desire to go at full throttle.

"In this competition you could take the smaller sides lightly when you have such big games elsewhere in the competition," Martyn said.

"When you come up against the likes of Kenya and Holland, you can slip down. We have made a conscious effort not to do that in these games. We wanted to go out in every game and play it hard and win as big as we can and as quick as we can."

"We know what Kenya are about. We watched their games, we watched the game (against Zimbabwe) closely yesterday. They are playing well and thoroughly deserve their spot."
