But the players do seem to suffer from sentimentality. ....... |
That's why they have player managers. |
As well they should. But the evidence of their sentimentality is from players who all have player managers (and the more professional the manager, the bigger the sentimentality on display).
It's not really sentimentality. More like the endowment effect & loss aversion.

^Woods, is that like Buckley saying Dawes place in the team couldnt be guaranteed because we had Lynch, or almost everyone on Nicks saying that Cloke was superfluous to needs because Darcy would be our key forward target for the next decade? Youd hope that those paid to worry about these things would have learnt that such plans are temporary. Id have thought the team could find a spot for Darcy somewhere - say CHB?

Yes, but is that what Darcy wants? How many Brownlow votes do defenders get. If he has ambitions to win a Brownlow or two like his old man did he'd be wanting a role that attracts votes. And that role might be at another club.

Darcy would only have to look at Ben Reid to see how moving back can win you a premiership and make you famous for ever.

What would we want back from Norf to do the deal?
I think we have a reasonable hand in that he clearly won't refuse to play for us if a reasonable deal can't be done.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-06-26/indicative-draft-order-round-14-edition
Norf: Pick 11 and 29 which most would see as a low return would not be the end of the world as we would end up with 11, 15, 29, 51 and 53. Otherwise could be pick 11 and a future 1st or player.
Cal Twomey has Quaynor ranked at 13 (matching a bid) in his mock draft. If that is accurate we would be a chance to use picks 11 and 15 in a super draft and pay for Quaynor and Kelly with subsequent picks.
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2018/06/25/twomeys-first-round-afl-mock-draft/
Aints: have pick 3 and then 57. Even with a super draft, they would need a player or to trade up for a second pick you would think.
De Goey's best has been very good, but he has hardly been consistent. Offer his value (to Collingwood) and if he wants to leave then maximise trade return whether that be from Norf or elsewhere.
Could end up as another Beams-type trade - the win you didn't realise you wanted. |
Like the theory around this, particularly with Quaynor (academy) and Will Kelly (f/s) eligible if they nominate for this years draft so more points the better.
Trouble is then finding the quality cum-100 game type player and there's a fair gap on our list, that's where De Goey was elevating towards.
As MightyMagpie alludes to, I'd take the compensation picks as opposed to matching $1m a season.
I'd reserve that coin for players that have made the All Australia 22 Under 22 team. I've heard a few people mention AAU22 Tom Lynch from Gold Coast as a potential target...
De Goey hasn't made the final 22 let alone the squad since being listed. (Crisp & Maynard have made the squad but haven't made the 22) as opposed to those highlighted having made the grade.
I know I keep banging on about the 22 Under 22 team/squad but I find it a more objective approach to just relying on our own internal assessments.
+ we have a glaring gap up forward on the quality KPP front.
While it's far from a guaranteed formula, it's pretty apparent we take it into account as the core DNA to our list management and future success.
B: Langdon Maynard (2016 squad only)
HB : Howe Moore Scharenberg
C: Phillips De Goey Crisp (2015 & 2016 squad only)
HF:
F: Elliott Stephenson
Rucks
Grundy
Sidebottom
Treloar
Then those that are still eligible going forward.
. Phillips 22
. Moore 22
Aish 22 (was on track to be in contention for this list)
JDG 22
Maynard 21
Sier 20
Murray 20
C Brown 20
. McLarty 20
Daicos 19
Appleby 19
M Lynch 19
Murphy 18
T Brown 18
COMPENSATION
A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.
The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:
1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.
Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.
Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:
1st round
end of 1st round
2nd round
end of 2nd round
3rd round
In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

Saints confirm interest in De Goey
By Jon Pierik
28 June 2018 1:24pm
St Kilda have declared their interest in Collingwood midfielder Jordan De Goey and are prepared to trade their top pick in this year's draft as part of a "really aggressive" list-management approach.
While North Melbourne have tabled a $5 million deal over five years for De Goey, the Saints have also been linked with the emerging star, particularly as they have room in their salary cap to chase two elite players.

Yes, perhaps we could get Nathan Freeman back as part of a trade. I thought St Kilda were offering less than North Melbourne

25 goal a season forwards aren't winning Brownlow's.
That is where Moore is presently and I'd like to think he's more concerned about getting fit, working hard and getting a kick than delusions of grandeur.
He still has a long way to go yet to prove himself an A grade performer let alone a worthy Brownlow medalist.

Wayne Carey often has some sensible, measured things to say. It seems he is not as into making sensationalist headlines as much as some other footy commentators.
