Personally, I'd rather start with a solid hit out against the Suns or even Melbourne - someone comfortably towards the bottom of the ladder.
No one will be happier than me of we knock of the Tiges, but these once-off, super-hyped blockbusters fill me with dread (yes, the Y2K was 20 years ago, but I still have scars) |

Normally I would be all apprehensive about a blockbuster such as this on the horizon. But if Rd 1 is any yardstick, the lack of crowd = lack of atmosphere = the game becomes akin to a glorified training run.
I'm not sure yet weather this will work in our favour or the Tigers'. _________________ Collingwood and cricket umpiring - my life is black and white. |

I reckon there will be a distinct lack of excitement at the footy without barrackers🙄😴😴 _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine! |

The game without barrackers is dead. The AFL have a brand and IMO playing games without crowds is one of the worst decisions ever made - dragging their 'brand' through the mud. Definitely not for me. _________________ HANDS OFF OUR JUMPER

I actually quite like the Footy without the Crowd.
Thought the Umpiring was Miles Better and was interesting to hear what players where saying.
Guess IF you not watch a Game without Crowds then people are not Hardcore Fans _________________ I am Da Man |

What the F ???? a blockbuster, cough, with NO fans, no people,no cheers, no boos, no jeering, no roaring, NO atmosphere. ???? This is NOT footy, no way Jose, this is a total bloody farce, this is ludicrous, fans are to the game, blockbusters, what sauce is to meat pies, absolutely indispensable. sigh. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

Spot on, 100%. fans are the lifeblood of the game, absolutely, I recently watched the 1909 GF between blues and swans, and fans packed the then MCG to the rafters, all in old fashioned clothes, bowler hats etc, but even then, no sound on film, but you could see them yelling, barracking, cheering, urging on their teams, abusing the umpire jack elder also. ! Its the oldest film of an AFL game, then VFL, and it had FANS THERE, FOOTY WITH NO FANS, AINT FOOTY. end of rant. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

I completely agree with the entire sentiment that fans make the game - this is also my view. The sad reality though is that TV and advertising make the AFL - it is all about the money. TV and advertising money comes back without fans. |

The no crowds actually works to the AFLs advantage. They are current held ransom by the MCG which prevents them becoming truely national.
No crowds and then transitioning to smaller crowds (with social distancing) will allow the game to transition to the made for TV sport and allow it to become a true Australia wide game.
And that will allow the GF to be played in another State which I think is the ultimate goal of the AFL. _________________ Fighting against the objectification of woman. |

How are they "held to ransom by the MCG"?
My understanding is that the relationship is mutually beneficial. |

If it's not played without crowds, it will be dead anyway.
Financially, the AFL and its clubs will be stuffed, if it doesn't get games played with an income from TV rights this year.
So I guess footy supporters have a choice - watch and support your team on TV or stand by bitching while clubs and the game die.

I agree Dave.
When watching the first round, for the first five minutes it was downright strange and odd. Then being able to hear the sounds of the actual game rather than the spectators - the thud of the footy as it is kicked, the thwack of player bodies coming together, the yells and instructions of the players, the interpretations from the umpires. It reminded me very much of the unique enjoyment of watching country footy.
By the second quarter, I was in my usual "footy zone". A bomb could've gone off outside my door, and it wouldn't have registered on me
By the second half, I was yelling and pumping the air , just as per normal.
I'd much prefer this experience to no footy at all. |

In my opinion, some footy even without crowds is better than no footy at all.
