New reported cases in the US overnight totaled 61,848 (just a month ago, the figure was 19,058) and the current 7-day rolling average of new cases per day is 54,265.
Put another way, in the last 7 days, the US has recorded 379,851 new cases.
In the last 24 hours, there were, eg, over 10,000 new cases in Texas, almost 10,000 new cases in Florida, over 8,500 cases in California, about 3,500 cases in each of Arizona and Georgia and nearly 2,500 cases in Tennessee.
There are presently 1,631,391 active cases in the US.
Obviously, Victoria's 932 active cases are a significant concern for those of us who live here (and possibly also for those poor folk in NSW who aren't able to dodge eddsmith's Covidy Victorian breath when he decsends on them ). It is evident, though that things can get much, much worse very quickly without the reimposition of appropriate restrictions when and as required. |

Both great observational pieces well worth reading. I'm sure though that Police brutality and starving residents will be editorial fodder in some less reputable news sources. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

From the ABC blog:
Quote: | Victorians have been urged to wear masks when they leave their homes after the state recorded 288 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, the largest daily increase of the pandemic so far.
Premier Daniel Andrews said masks were not being made mandatory, but people in lockdown areas should wear masks in situations where they cannot maintain physical distancing.
"It is our request of you, it's not compulsory," he said.
"We are simply asking that if you can, wear a mask where you can't distance."
That could include shopping, travelling in a cab, using public transport or going to work, the Premier said.
He said the Government would make and distribute 2 million single-use masks. In the meantime, a homemade mask or scarf would be appropriate.
"You might not be able to keep your distance, then a homemade mask will be of some benefit to you, to your family, to your suburb, your community and indeed of us all," he said.
Mr Andrews said 37,588 tests were conducted yesterday.
"That is the biggest single day of testing that has been done and by some considerable margin," he said.
....
Victoria now has 1,172 active cases.
There are 47 people in hospital in Victoria, up from 40 yesterday.
That includes 12 people in intensive care units, up from 9 yesterday.
Professor Sutton predicted the number of hospitalisations and deaths would soon get much worse.
"We will see an increase in hospitalised and ICU cases, and in deaths, in the coming days because of the spike that we have seen in recent days," he said.
"It is because we're seeing people who are most vulnerable, the elderly, those with chronic illness, coming down with infection."
But when asked whether the pandemic was out of control in Victoria, he said no.
"We are working on controlling this. We know what works. We know it works through our first wave," he said.
"It absolutely has to have people doing the right thing across the board."

COVID live reports the numbers this way:
Quote: | 288 new #COVID19Aus cases in Victoria (+299 total)
• 26 linked to known outbreaks
• 262 under investigation
• 11 reclassified |
https://covidlive.com.au/vic
It is not obvious from the data why COVID live is reporting only an additional 240 active cases today - they are not reporting recoveries, athough that would be a usual explanation. Not much point speculating. It will, no doubt, become apparent ion time. |

Among those flouting the rules, which came into effect at 11:59pm on Wednesday, were 16 people found hiding out the back of a house in Dandenong while attending a birthday party.
Police were tipped off about the party after paramedics spotted two people at KFC in Dandenong ordering food for 20 people at 1:30am on Friday.
"They spoke to the people at KFC and subsequently, there was a report made to us," Chief Commissioner Patton said.
"We got the registration number of the car and we followed through and went to that address in Dandenong."
Police found two people asleep in the house and 16 others hiding out the back.
"That is ridiculous, that type of behaviour," Chief Commissioner Patton said.
All 16 people were fined by police.
"That is $26,000 that birthday party is costing them."
"That is a heck of a birthday party to recall. They will remember that one for a long time."
