You lost me at “Professor Richard Pringle at Monash University”.
I’m sick of so called academics and the agendas that they push in fields that shouldn’t even be degrees or PhD’s.
Anything to do with humanities should be night school or at the maximum a TAFE short course. _________________ - Side By Side - |

I actually love history. But it could easily be just a TAFE course.
How anyone can have a career which is solely based on historical events that have already happened is beyond me. IMHO it should be classified as a hobby.
A waste of taxpayer funds and just another rubbish and useless university course which offers very little economic benefit. _________________ - Side By Side -

I have always liked history. But it could easily be just a TAFE course.

Depends, there is an old saying, " if we forget the lessons of hstory, we are condemned to repeat them" Many useless wars, intolerance, bigotry, hate, religious zealotry, testify too that. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

I totally agree with that saying....but that being someone’s career??
Analysing history is totally subjective just like following any particular football team. I just don’t see how it can be a university course. _________________ - Side By Side - |

Slangman, that's such an incredibly ignorant view, I can't even engage with it. |

That’s ok.
I’m just of the view that there are too many university courses these days that don’t offer much to society other than an opinion.....and let’s be honest, it doesn’t take going to uni for someone to have an opinion.
I don’t value an “academics” opinion more than the average person’s.
Particularly any that are from Humanities.
But we both support the same football team....it’s a club made of many! 😀 _________________ - Side By Side - |

Correct weight. Some people are allowed to hold ignorant views and who is Slangman to miss out? _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

The English minor at Uni in me wants to point out the spelling of your second last word too should be to. However you are 100% correct. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Indeed. It is very difficult to know where to start when faced with blind, bigoted ignorance of that ilk. I mean, one could hunt around for a first point to make which might be understood, then a second, all the while recalling that Rome wasn't built in a day, but in all probability nothing anyone could say would make the slightest bit of difference. It's not a point of view, it's a great big chip on the shoulder and I doubt that anything could remove it. Best not to try. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

Gotta be careful attacking academics with an agenda on this board, without them who would the loony lefties have left to support? |

^ Pathetic, cheap shot. I don't think there's a single person who has posted on this subject agreeing with Pringle. |

I think I said all I have to say on the subject here:

Remember, if you start shutting down humanities departments, you don't just stop Little Johnny from taking on an arts elective; you more or less kill those disciplines as a whole in that country. Without undergraduate courses, where are you going to get the masters students, the research papers and the expert contributions to the relevant global discussions in these areas? You can complain about my 'factory line' remarks all you like, but where are the meaningful contributions to these fields of study going to come from? How can this result in anything but a dumbing down of society?
Let's be clear about what humanities subjects are:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanities
Quote: | Fields:
Anthropology
Classics
History
Geography
Languages
Law and Politics
Literature
Performing arts
Philosophy
Religion
Visual arts |
In aggregate, that's the study of human culture, practically in its entirety. You want to flush all of these fields down the toilet? |
