Apparently the Oscars are on today, doubt anything terribly exciting will come of it. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace

I think David posted that after it happened
But CODA winning best picture is great to see and about time the deaf got a bit of center stage. |

For sure (I also thought Sound of Metal, which got a best picture nomination a year or two back, was also a very good film about hearing loss). Have you seen CODA, Eddie? Is it any good?
On the Chris Rock thing, how bizarre is it that Smith won the Oscar for best actor just fifteen minutes or so after that happened? Not ideal timing, to say the least! Wonder if Rock will press charges. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Anyone explain the GI Jane ref that sparked Will Smith off?

His wife has some condition alopecia that caused her to lose her hair, apparently GI Jane was bald? So it was making fun of his wife's hair which is caused by her condition that she apparently struggles with. |

OK, cool. I missed that, GI Jane starred Demi Moore with the shaved head, so I get the comparison but didn't know the Alopecia thing.
Smith has copped some crap over his relationship recently, apparently she has other partners with his consent, I was leading that way and struggling.
Takes some set of balls to calmly walk up on stage and smack a presenter at the Oscars in the mouth like that and a bigger set by Chris Rock to react the way he did. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

By now I would have thought Will Smith would be used to his wife being in the mouth of other men. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Groan,
That belongs in the jokes thread, it's as bad as anything Billy has done. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

So Chris Rock's response should have been "Why, am I too old for her?" |

I thought it was staged. When you watch the video Rock tells the joke. They cut to Smith laughing, then back to Rock and ten seconds later Smith walks up and hits him. Maybe Smith was a bit slow and it took him awhile to get the insult.
I'm also a survivor of alopcecia, yet I wasn't triggered by the incident. 🤔 |

Spanish filmmaker Pedro AlmodĂłvar (who was sitting near the stage at the time, quite close to the Smith table) on the Will Smith / Chris Rock incident:
https://www.indiewire.com/2022/03/pedro-almodovar-oscars-2022-zendaya-will-smith-1234712971/
Quote: | I have deliberately avoided the violent episode that is the only thing talked about the next day. I was barely four meters from where it happened. In the general overhead shots, I am the little white head you see in the photo.
I refuse to let that episode mark the gala and be the protagonist of a ceremony where many more things happened and of much greater interest. For example, “Drive My Car,” without a doubt my favorite film of the year, won Best International Feature Film. And also “Summer of Soul,” my favorite documentary.
Still, as I said, I was very close to the protagonists. What I saw and heard produced a feeling of absolute rejection in me. Not only during the episode, but afterward, too, in the acceptance speech — a speech that seemed more like that of a cult leader. You don’t defend or protect the family with your fists, and no, the devil doesn’t take advantage of key moments to do his work.
The devil, in fact, doesn’t exist. This was a fundamentalist speech that we should neither hear nor see. Some claim that it was the only real moment in the ceremony, but they are talking about the faceless monster that is the social media. For them, avid for carrion, it undoubtedly was the great event of the night. |

We've had this discussion but I'm interested in what others think.
Part of a comedian's job is to take the piss out of people. He apparently didn't know she had Alopecia, just commented on her hair cut.
Alopecia has different forms but it just means hair loss. It's not painful or life threatening. Blokes go bald all the time, If the Grim Reaper showed up tonight and offered me the choice of heart disease, cancer or alopecia I'm getting the clippers out and I like my hair.
She doesn't have a serious medical condition, it's a vanity thing about losing hair and even if Rock did know she had it, Smith was way over the top with his response.
If anyone condones Smiths actions, they condone anyone walking up on stage and belting a performer who says something that upsets them. Does that mean every stand up comedian needs a security guard standing behind them? _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
