Australian Minjee Lee makes history, wins $2.5million US Open golf
Australian golfer Minjee Lee has won the US Open title at Pine Needles by four strokes, earning her a $2.5million cheque that set a record for women in the sport.
The 26-year-old was sprayed with champagne by fellow Aussie Hannah Green after her triumph on Monday morning Australian time, which saw her shoot 71 on the final day after saving several pars thanks to her outstanding form with the putter.
'I'm speechless, I can't believe it right now,' she said.
'It's super special and such a great honour right now. It's always been my dream to win this since I was a little girl.'

"Lee's brother Min Woo, also a golfer, was full of emotion when talking about his sister on Twitter, accompanying an image of her lifting the trophy with an adorable childhood photo.
He even called his sister right in the middle of the ceremony!
It's the second Major win for Lee, who won the Evian Championship last year in an incredible come-from-behind victory, and she has stamped herself as one to watch when it comes to winning the big bucks and big trophies.
The total prize purse was $13,870,850; almost double what the prizemoney was for the event last year and an incredible boon for women's golf." _________________ Donny.

Media say her brother let slip that she'd had putting yips during her drought.
Min Woo: "She knows she slowed down early in the year but she's found a way to win again, which was near career-ending kind of putter yips and now she's slowly overcoming that."
Minjee won the Macau Open & BMW Championship in October.
And her (record) 3rd Greg Normal Medal last Tuesday. 2018 and 2021 were the other years. (Cameron Smith and Jason Day have won twice each.) |
