Still alive atm, but very close to death. Although I'm not religious, and I don't agree with alot of thing that the Pope had to say, I believe he deserves some respect. When he eventually passes on, Rest in Peace.
Please don't use this thread to debate the merits of religion. |

Must not be long now.
I am interested to know why so much effort was put into prolonging his life.
After all, he will surely receive his reward and ascend to heaven.
I really would have thought he, and his followers/staff would have let him slip away much more easily.
RIP. |

The Pope has now passed away at 5.37am Sunday April 3, 2005.
Quote: | "The Holy Father died this evening at 9:37 pm (0537 AEST Sunday) in his private apartment. All the procedures outlined in the apostolic Constitution 'Universi Dominici Gregis' that was written by John Paul II on February 22, 1996, have been put in motion." |

As a person brought up as a Catholic, schooled at a Catholic School, I knew that in watching it all unfolding this week, that he wouldn't make it through the weekend.
What has surprised me though, is that it actually has affected me quite deeply.
The Pope, The Dalai Lama and the Reverend Desmond Tutu are 3 people who I've always had the greatest admiration for.
I remember the Pope visiting Alice Springs whilst we lived there, and taking my daughter to the Alice Springs Showgrounds to see this revered person and although part of a large crowd, I still felt the presence and spirituality of this man of God.

Several years ago, I was with a couple of colleagues inside the Vatican, going to meet some Monsignor or other. Passed the pope (well him and couple of others) in a corridor. I'd have to say the guy did have an amazing aura about him, more so than anyone else I've been in contact with. I'm probably as sceptical as they come, but there was absolutely no doubt about it. It affected one person I was with to such a degree she converted to catholicism after the experience. |

I found it amazing the way one man can have so much effect on so many people from all over the world.... in fact if all catholics followed everything he said, he would be the most powerful man on Earth.
Anyway, very sad to see him die..... I'm not a catholic and don't really get the whole pope thing, but there is no doubt in my mind that he was a very great man. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

David, he was 84.
Why "sad to see him die" ? As you're not RC, why sad ?
You say he was "a very great man" so why not celebrate his life ? _________________ Donny.

At least he is no longer suffering, may he rest in peace. As Donny said, he was 84 years old so people should relfect on celebrating his life, rather than mourning his death.
My family is Roman Catholic but none of us go to church or anything like that and religion is not at all a big part of our lives.
Personally, I'm yet to make up my own mind on where I stand with religion and I believe that is my choice regardless of what I was born into. _________________ There is just one team we favour... |

Deeply saddened to see such a great man of faith and morals pass away. He is now with the Lord in heaven. Rest in peace Pope John Paul II. |

Having spent friday-monday at Walhalla, we thought we would be absent to any news concerning the pope, until a 70yr old gent informed us the pope had passed, he was somewhat confused when he saw me smile.
p.s when referring to the pope, i find it offensive to see the dalai lama name wriitten alongside. _________________ free energy i$ coming.... |

Well you'd assume he is. If this Pope didn't make the cut I think the rest of us are pretty screwed. |
