looks like sunlun are poised to sign him. don't know what this means for kevin phillips, as I don't see how they will be able to play up front together. still, it would be good have keano on board

SUNDERLAND AGREE PRICE FOR KEANE
by Nick Alexander

Sunderland have agreed a fee with Leeds United for Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane.

The Elland Road club today granted the Black Cats permission to open talks with Keane and his representatives to complete the final details of the transfer.

It is no secret that Peter Reid is an admirer of the 21-year-old who moved to Leeds from Inter Milan for £12 million last summer after a loan spell in West Yorkshire.

Keane was a revelation in the World Cup finals, scoring three goals as Mick McCarthy's men reached the second phase in style before going out on penalties to Spain in heart-breaking fashion.

The Dublin-born frontman has played 37 times for his country, scoring 13 goals, and is rated by Sunderland's Niall Quinn as one of the best young talents in the game.

A proven striker is Reid's number one priority this summer as he rebuilds after last season, and Keane tops the Sunderland boss's hit list.

The frontman's last-gasp goal for Ireland against Germany in Ibaraki is one of the most memorable moments of the World Cup in Japan and Korea.

"..we flew at them as a hawk to his prey, passed through them in the disordered state in which they were, separated them into two distinct parts and then tacked upon their largest division.." -- Captain Cuthbert Collingwood, 1797
