Australia are playing England, not Sri Lanka.

So far, the Aussies are starving the Englishwomen!

After 42 overs, the Poms are 1/61! S Collyer made 29.

Check these bowling figures: Fitzpatrick 1/14 from 16 overs with 9 maidens, Twining 0/7 from 7, Blackwell 0/5 from 5.

Some quite amazing figures in the first day's play in this Test and before anyone jumps in to bag women's cricket, let's see how the Aussies bat first.

England crawled to 9/124 in 108 overs. Australia bowled 50 maidens!

Cathryn Fitzpatrick led the attack with 3/32 from 29 overs and 14 maidens and her opening partner, Emma Twining, took 1/17 from 20 with 11 maidens.

The 4 other bowlers - McGregor, Blackwell, Rolton and Sthalekar - bowled 44 overs incl. 24 maidens and took 5/47.

Collyer scored 29 from 133 balls, Leng got 26 from 130, Taylor 14 from 107 and Harper is 20 n.o. from 71.

Fitzpatrick took only 3 balls to take the last wicket. There was no addition to the score so England were all out for 124.

Australia are already in big trouble at 4/45 from 21 overs. Newton (2/5) has just taken 2 wickets.

Belinda Clark and Karen Rolton, the Aussies best two batters, are out.

Pearson took 4/31, Newton 3/10 and Connor 2/8.

England lead by 46.

England are now 6/56 and lead by 102.

Julie Hayes ripped through the middle order with 3/9 from 9 overs after Cathryn Fitzpatrick took 2/17 early. Edwards scored 27.

Interesting third day coming up with England on 8/87 and leading by 133 with two wickets in hand.

Fitzpatrick took her third (3/25) wicket right on stumps.

These scores are an embarrasment, these two sides are the best in world & struggle to get past 150 runs per innings in a Test Match.

The sooner womens cricket is banned the better, it is farce that these matches are given any credibility.

LoL women's cricket banned did you say? How funny! I mean I couldn't care less about it but I think saying it should be banned is going a bit far! Not that I would protest if it was banned LoL!

What a great fightback by Australia! Our two best batters, Belinda Clark and Karen Rolton, rose to the occasion and set up an excellent victory against the old enemy.

Cathryn Fitzpatrick (4/2 Cool

and Julie Hayes (3/9) did most damage and Emma Twining, Karen Rolton and Lisa Sthalekar each took a wicket as England were dismissed for 92 in their second innings which left a target of 139.

Clark and Sthalekar opened with 22 before the latter went for a duck. Obviously, Clark was batting well and she and Rolton then put on the brightest partnership of the Test as they added 78 with Rolton scoring 46 of them.

The Aussies then lost 4 quick wickets between 100 and 111. During this time, Belinda Clark (47) became our highest run scorer.

Julie Hayes (18 n.o.) and Alex Blackwell (9 n.o.) really gutsed it out as they scored the 28 needed for victory. It took them 28 overs!!

Cathryn Fitzpatrick took 8/60 in the Test to win Player of the Match.

Well done to the Aussies! After being skittled for 78 in their first innings they fought back hard to take the Test.

Sorry banning womens cricket is not really what I meant, only playing international matches is meaningless. Local park is OK for the girls if they want to play. Allowing them to play on international grounds in Australia is embarrassing.

If honesty is a curse, I make no apolgies for being exactly that.

I am a huge fan of womens sports such as Netball & Hockey, & even our champion female athelete Cathy Freeman, but women's cricket is shocking & I'll stand by that statement forever.

Pearson equals world record as Test ends in draw
ECB Media Release - 25 February 2003

Lucy Pearson today became only the second woman in the history of women's Test cricket to take an eleven-wicket haul in a match, equalling a record which has stood for 46 years.

Pearson, who took 7-51 in the first innings, and 4-57 in the second, joins the Australian, Betty Wilson, who took eleven wickets in Adelaide in 1957 against England. Pearson was named Player of The Match.

The Ashes remain in Australia following the one Test win for the home side at The Gabba last week, as the closely contested second Test ended in a draw today at The Bankstown Oval, Sydney.

Australia regained the initiative following a strong opening two days from England, with Lisa Sthalaker and Alex Blackwell putting on a fifth wicket world record stand of 136, which was also held by Betty Wilson and V Batty from the 1957 series.

Once Pearson bowled Blackwell, Edwards dismissed Julie Hayes with a direct hit run-out and Claire Taylor caught Fitzpatrick from the bowling of her Yorkshire namesake for 11. Sthalaker finished the innings on 121 not out and Australia declared on 259-7, a lead of 206.

England made the worst possible start to the run chase, losing opener Sarah Collyer for 3 trapped lbw by Emma Twining in the 4th over but Kathryn Leng and Charlotte Edwards began building a platform, reaching their 50 partnership in the 29th over.

England Head Coach, John Harmer, reflected that many positives have come from this tour, not least the return to fluent form of Edwards and Leng's resilience in opening the batting.

Australia struck back either side of tea interval, Leng lbw to centurion Sthalaker for 28 and Thompson trapped the same way by Player of the Series, Cathryn Fitzpatrick for just 4; still 142 runs in arrears.

Whilst Edwards remained at the crease, England always had a chance as the Kent batter hit out with an array of shots, including twenty runs in three overs, driving Twining sweetly through the on-side, sweeping Kris Britt and pulling Hayes in consecutive deliveries.

Edwards was unfortunate to be given lbw to Fitzpatrick with the third ball of her third spell, to a delivery which climbed sharply and struck above the pad.

When Fitzpatrick bowled the seventeen-year-old Lydia Greenway for 0, Claire Taylor, who has found some real constituency in England's middle order, settled nerves again. Taylor frustrated the Australia bowling attack in the last Ashes Series, reaching 137 at Headingley to ensure they batted for a second time, and here she added 21 not out to her 48 not out in the first innings.

England's batting has lost much of the vulnerability which the Australian's exploited eighteen months ago, and despite losing Captain, Clare Connor, for 0, Taylor and Newton ended the match unbeaten, with a deficit of 74 runs and three wickets in hand.

Reflecting on the Series, John Harmer said "we've come a long way together as a team on this tour, and I'm proud of everything the players have achieved. When we arrived in New Zealand for the quadrangular series last month, we were ranked 5th in the world and had already been written off in the Ashes series. Now, we're ranked at 3 in one-day cricket and have competed in every session of the Test matches.

The players are starting to realise they're really not that far away from Australia who are ranked number 1 and we're closing the gap all the time.

We have some genuine match winners in the side in addition to some young talent. We'll look forward to facing South Africa this summer at home".
