Collingwood is making a deliberate decision here.

http://www.triplem.com.au/melbourne/spo ... -on-beams/

I'm actually not sure if I agree. I fully support taking a stand but I also struggle with the idea of playing guys who don't want to be here. The circumstances are such that, potentially, if he takes the field for us next year his heart won't be in it.

Yeah, he's a competitive beast so once on the field he'll give it his best, but when you have someone's heart and mind you get the discretionary effort from them, they go the extra mile in their preparation and training because they're engaged. If he doesn't want to be there, you lose that. We end up with a Beams playing at 80-90% of his best who then refuses to re-sign and we do it all over again.

(NB Read the link, he is NOT a free agent at the end of 2015 unless the AFL change the rules)

So for mine, unless we think we have a real chance of changing his mindset, we cut our losses, take pick 5 and 25, do it now and spend the rest of the trade period on how to use those picks.

If Brisbane aren't prepared to throw in 21 as well then they can well and truly get stuffed.

For me if we can get Greenwood for pick *25, give up on Varcoe and get pick 23 for Lumumba we'll end up at the end of this trade period with picks
5, 9(Moore), 21, 23, *25(Greenwood), 30.

A few if's there but it would be a pass mark with two top 5 picks (bid for Moore at 5), 3 picks between 20-30 and Greenwood.

*We might be forced to part with one of the lower second round picks for Greenwood.
I'm just worried about our age profile if we bring in another four 18 year olds. We've lost so much experience over the past few years, it'd be tough to make finals with such a young list and if we're not winning, the trolls and the ferals will use it as an excuse to hammer Buckley and our young players miss out on finals experience and a winning culture.

Get us one more best 22 midfielder with one of those picks in the 20's from another club and I suppose we'd be alright. The new player would have to be under 25 though. Basically we need two Greenwood's to make it work.

Because there is talk of of two deals:

pick 4 + 7

pick 4 + 20 something and two players

Now tell me that accepting pick 5 or even 5 + 25 for Beams is not a surrender for the Pies. And remember this is the Giants starting point, they're not doing a Brisbane and starting with a completely unacceptable offer (pick 5).
Has anyone got Greg Swan's email? Should forward this to him, great post.

Beams is worth a shit load more than Griffen due to the age difference, Beams would be one of the top 3 most valuable mids in the comp (again due to his age), he's about to hit his peak and he's already pretty much done it all.

Pick 5 + 25 is not good enough. Simple. I can't remember the last time any team lost such an important player for so little. We should not accept it this season under any circumstances.

We don't have to keep Beams though. Once we refuse to deal with Brisbane will he: a) stay at the Pies for another year or b) decide to deal with other teams, including Gold Coast?

I say that the Lions will finally offer a fairer deal and it will get done. If not though, I think it very likely Beams will open up talks with other clubs.

If Beams was able to be traded to any club in the land then I'm sure we could extract pick 1 from the saints and perhaps even 2 and 3 from the demons.

Beams desire to go to Brisbane and be closer to his "sick dad" is hampering us in getting the best deal as we were willing to try and do the best thing by him.

Brisbane haven't come to the party though so it's now time to reach a compromise and GWS could be it.

We should be meeting with them tonight and see if they can afford Beams and are interested.

At the very least we may be able to bluff Brisbane into giving us more by seeking out GWS for serious discussions.

^^Good point. Who'd they rather Griffen or Beams? I could see them preferring Beams, and right now the Dogs are refusing to trade Griffen anyway.

If Brisbane keep offering rubbish deals, hopefully Beams will decide that it might be fun to play with his good mate, Heater.

Welcome to the professional era. Players wanted free agency - well that cuts both ways, including honouring your contract. You want to be paid like a professional - act like one, man up and play for your team

And by going to GWS he would be closer to his family!!!!!! (Apologies if someone has already rolled that line out)

Another Beams thread. Yippee.
Only clubs that are willing to pay him $800k a year over 5 years would be a chance, wouldn't they? How many of them are around? Depends who has cap space or who clubs are prepared to move on to make it.

And being on contract, would it mean he would have to want to go too?

He's not a slave. You can't make a player stay if they don't want to.
