The teams that advance to the round of 16 are:

A Italy Wales Switzerland
B Belgium Denmark
C Netherlands Austria Ukraine
D England Croatia Czech Republic
E Sweden Spain
F France Germany Portugal

Before the tournament, I thought that Switzerland, Finland, Austria, North Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary wouldn't progress. In fact, Switzerland got there instead of Turkey, Russia missed out from Group B and Austria got through in Group C, the Czech Republic got through and Scotland missed out in Group D and Groups E and F went as expected.

So, as expected, Denmark (4-0 over Wales) and Italy (2-1 over Austria, all goals scored in extra time) won their round of 16 games. Next up will be victories for the Netherlands and Belgium.

A couple of upsets in the round of 16, with the Netherlands and France exiting early. Overnight, England beat Germany (which I hadn't expected) and Ukraine knocked out a 10-man Sweden with a goal in the the final moments of extra time. So, only half the 8 matches went as I tipped, which shows that the match-ups are becoming more interesting.

And so to the quarter finals. There is definitely a weaker side to this draw - and England are on it, so they may be a chance.

My predictions are in bold:

Switzerland v Spain (2.00 am this Saturday, AEST)
Belgium v Italy (5.00 am this Saturday, AEST)

Czech Republic v Denmark (2.00 am this Sunday, AEST)
Ukraine v England (5.00 am this Sunday, AEST)

The only one of those predictions I'm confident about is Spain, which should comfortably account for Switzerland. Really, the Swiss advanced because of some pathetic French defending, not because they are a particularly good team - the French should never have lost after Pogba put them 3-1 up in the second half, penalty shoot-out or otherwise. The Belgians have the talent to beat Italy but Italy's defending has been ridiculously good for a long period of time and the Italians have - for about 1,000 years or so - made a habit of clutching wins in major tournaments against great teams on the back of the best defence, so we'll see. I've predicted an Italian victory but it wouldn't surprise me if Belgium won 3-0. The Czechs beat the Netherlands (who should have been finalists), so you have to think they'll beat Denmark. Although I'd love to see Andriy Shevchenko get Ukraine past England - like the great Jari Litmanen of Finland, he was another magnificent player who was burdened by birth with playing for a garbage national team - it's hard to see that happening. England having beaten Germany, you'd think they could get the job done.
