Post by Donny »

"Aussie tennis star, Alex de Minaur paid tribute to his fighting spirit after he came back from one set down to beat Tommy Paul in the final of the Mexican Open in Acapulco on Sunday.

The 24-year-old lost the first set, but forced his way back into the match to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a two-hour and 26-minute slog.

'I know the hard work I've put in to be here, and it's good to see the results."

"Alex de Minaur is celebrating the biggest title of his career as he prepares to gatecrash the world’s top 20 and replace Nick Kyrgios as the top-ranked Australian again.

With Kyrgios still recovering from knee surgery, de Minaur’s riveting 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Australian Open semi-finalist Tommy Paul in Sunday’s Acapulco final will propel him to No.18 and within three spots of his career-high ranking."

Alcaraz beat de Minaur 6-4 6-4 to win Queens and reclaim the #1 ranking.

That'll make Alcaraz top seed at Wimbledon.

But sounds like a pretty good result for Alex, making the final.

Play suspended on Court 18 in Alex's 1st-round match.

De Minaur leads Coppejans 67 63 63.

He's the 15th seed.

AdM got through in 4, after it looked like it'd go to 5.

Sadly his draw is brutal. Unlikely to make it past the next few rounds. Could lose next round.

^^^ Yup.

Got overpowered by Berrettini. Straight sets. Always seemed possible.

Dunno what AdM can do. Needs a time machine to go back to tennis before the power game took over.

Alexei Popyrin beat Wawrinka to win the Croatian Open.

Meanwhile...

Nick Kyrgios will fall out of the top 100 as his tour absence continues.

Jannik Sinner beat Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-1 in the Canadian Open final.

An Oz man hasn't won a Masters 1000 title since 2003 (Hewitt, Indian Wells). This was Sinner's first (Fognini was the only Italian previously). JS and AdM played doubles together.

AdM had beaten Norrie, Fritz and Medvedev just to get to the final.

"De Minaur had never been beyond the last 16 in a Masters 1000 event previously and will be rewarded for his Toronto run with a six-spot climb to a career-high ranking of No.12 as he closes on his top-10 goal."

"Australian tennis has lost one of its brightest prospects, with Charlie Camus accepting an offer from the French federation to switch allegiances ahead of the Australian Open.

Camus, 17, won the junior male athlete of the year award at last month’s Newcombe Medal and was Australia’s top-ranked junior boy at No. 36, but he competed as a French player at this week’s Challenger event in Noumea, New Caledonia.

Camus’ father, Olivier, is French and represented France in field hockey, while his younger brother, Tommy, reached the 12-and-under boys’ national final at Melbourne Park barely a fortnight ago. Tommy Camus will continue to play for Australia.

Two sources familiar with the situation, who spoke anonymously because it was a private matter, told this masthead the French Tennis Federation’s offer was more lucrative than Tennis Australia’s, and the deal was months in the making."
