The Dutch have been pathetic. A World Cup 1/4 final and they haven’t turned up. Argentina is slow and useless at the back - but the Netherlands hasn’t put a single competent pass into the last half of the field. Just awful. Talk about playing down to the opposition’s level. Messi should, of course, have been carded (probably sent off) for handball but, like everything in soccer, the decision was moderated by reputation.
And then, inexplicably, the Dutch decide to bring on a forward. Weghurst 2, Argentina 2. Extra time. Perhaps if the Argentinians hadn’t spent the last 20 minutes kicking the legs out from under the opposition, they might not have been in this predicament.
Netherlands out on penalties. I guess all we need now to make the rest of the tournament an unwatchable shambles is for France to go out on penalties, as well.
^ There's still a chance they'll get to play Morocco. Personally, I expect France to win the final without raising a sweat - but they do have to get there, first.
