The knock on Framptons career has always been his inconsistency and that for whatever reason, his best and worst are poles apart. In his last year at Adelaide before joining the Pies, he was BOG against the Dogs as a key defender ( 3 Brownlow votes ) and looked like a world beater. Four games later, he was dropped from the seniors.
He’s the quintessential “ straight line “ big man who does his best work against forwards who like him, aren’t overly aerobically gifted. Give him a match up that suits him and he will likely continue to get it done but the concern will come when he’s matched up against the more athletic agile types. Having said that, Charlie Dean could learn a lot from Billys attack on the ball. It’s inspiring !

Anyway, I think Darcy Moore and Frampers complement each other beautifully. Frampers has the qualities Darcy lacks in many ways, and vice verca. Agree that you would not play Frampton against highlty agile forwards such as Ugle-Hagen, maybe Curnow etc. So against Carlton, for example, I would put Frampton on McKay and Moore on Curnow...please let me know in as tactful a way as possible if I am totally wrong!

Yes MM, Daniher has a reasonable amount of athleticism but he simply isn’t in great form at the moment. Frampton as a key defender, will always take the biggest deepest forward and Moore will play in front of him. If Billy is lucky, he will get a match up he likes, if not, then he just plays the opponent on merit. He’s in good form, so he’s probably better equipped to handle these guys now than at any time before. Fullback is all about understanding the angles and decision making. The longer you play the position, the better you become ( not much different to any position, except that different positions require different skill sets ) He’s most likely simply becoming smarter at playing the position. And given that he hasn’t yet played 50 games, he’s probably still learning at a rapid rate.

We may be seeing what the coaches have trained into him over the pre-season.

With nothing to lose, some new tricks, in a winless team, the only way for confidence is upwards. I think he has always been very serviceable, but so far, he looks like an AA contender.

But yeah, wonderful to hear that Frampers is getting recognition now. This will build his confidence going forward.

Thought I would give Billy’s thread a bump.
He’s a disciplined role player who has his faults but the trade ( future third round selection ) to bring him to Collingwood has been an inspired decision.
Premiership player in his first year and represented the club in both the ruck and key forward positions before now settling in as a key defender.
He’s improving, particularly his decision making in marking contests and you can’t ask for anything more than improvement in your players.
He’s still shaky at ground level, as per his couple fumbles against the Crows but his return compared to what he cost us, has been ten fold.
I’m a big believer of judging players against their draft pick or trade cost. If you’re coming to the club for a future third rounder, then you’re entitled to have faults and limitations but his efforts to improve is what has stood out for mine.

^do you think the fumbles are more due to fatigue? The gap between his impactful moments compared to those where he's shaky is wide, and I wonder if it's more fatigue related later in quarters as I don't see him as one that panics under pressure.
You hit the nail on the head in the last sentence. He's proved invaluable on that equation.

Not sure Laurie. I tend to think he’s just like a lot of 200cm players who aren’t great below their knees and that’s more a lack of agility or flexibility issue than anything else. Add in fatigue and the pressure that comes with playing on the last line, even the best will get caught out on occasions. Because his aerial work has improved, we’re not seeing that ground ball fumbling as often but he got caught out a couple times on the weekend.

Being involved in a NRL club for many years I remember the club recruiting players who struggled getting a game elsewhere and often wondered what the coach saw in them
I remember one day he spoke about some players taking longer to learn there trade and that having and instilling belief into a player and backing them can often be the difference between performance
I wonder if the belief Fly gave him in the GF last year is part of the reason we are seeing the Frampton we are now
I commented in the March review thread this week if I was giving out a most consistent player for just getting his job done with out fuss and fanfare so fat this season he would win it

I agree with most of P2016's comments. I'd just add that overall, I reckon Billy has been a consistently good player for us. As a defender, he has found his niche and seems to be getting better and better as his confidence grows. Fwiw, I reckon he'll be our fullback for the next 5 years.
