Maxwell continued his great run of form all year, and looked very solid in defence – with many saying he was the heir to James Clement’s throne as the premier Magpie defender. In a cruel twist to end his season, Maxwell injured his hamstring against Essendon in round 20 to finish off his year. In 2005, Maxwell was anointed Nicks Collingwood Page’s sponsored played for the year, taking over from the delisted Luke Shackleton.
